Council of Residency Directors (CORD) Resident Academic Achievement Award
Dr. Timothy Platts-Mills, one of our chief residents received the coveted CORD resident academic achievement award for 2007. This award, given to one EM resident, is intended to recognize an individual who has demonstrated much promise as a future academic faculty member. Tim is a wonderful teacher and clinician. In addition to numerous peer reviewed articles and book chapters, Tim will be the editor for the textbook “First Aid for the Emergency Medicine Boards”. He is a reviewer for Annals of Emergency Medicine and was recognized as a top 50 reviewer for 2006. Tim has accepted a faculty position at the University of North Carolina. Great work Tim!


Dr. Gene Kallsen has been selected by the Community Foundation as one of the “Ultimate People” of 2009. He received his award at a recent gala event (i.e. lots of great, free food, drinks, and music). Congrats to our Chief!


Congratulations to “Uncle” Marc Shalit for receiving the “Excellence in Teaching Award” from the UCSF Academy of Medical Educators. This prestigious award recognizes contributions to medical student and resident education in 2009.

Congratulations to Dr. Kenny Banh, who just received the highly coveted UCSF Distinction in Teaching
Award from the Academic Senate for 2011. Kenny was recognized for his ongoing contributions to the university in teaching medical students and residents, and he was selected from numerous applicants throughout UCSF–great work!

Greg Hendey was awarded the 2011 Excellence in Teaching award from the UCSF Academy of Medical Educators.

Excellence in Teaching

Stacy Sawtelle and Lori Weichenthal have been chosen for the 2012 Excellence in Teaching Award by the UCSF Academy of Medical Educators. This is a great honor that is well-deserved!

Research Award!

Congratulations to David Hakkarinen for winning the Borba Resident Research Award this year for his paper on MRI versus CT scan for occult hip fracture.

Jim Comes received the “Excellence in Teaching” award from the UCSF Academy of Medical Educators.

Rais Vohra was promoted to the “Clinical X” series at UCSF at the Associate Professor level.

Lori Weichenthal was just accepted into the Academy of Medical Educators at UCSF.

Congratulations to Sue Spano for winning the 2013 ACEP National Junior Faculty Teaching Award!

Omar Guzman was selected for the 2013-14 ACEP/EMRA Mini Fellowship in Health Policy in Washington DC, a four-week experience with a scholarship!


Congratulations to Deena Bengiamin, Stacy Sawtelle, Stu Maxwell, Peter Anastopoulos, Omar Guzman and Jaime Antuna for receiving the Academy of Medical Educators Cooke Award for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Their winning project was titled, “Development of an Inter-professional Patient Safety Curriculum in Emergency Medicine using Simulation” and will be presented at the upcoming UCSF Education Symposium.

Congratulations to Jeff Riddell, MD for being awarded a $4000 grant from the Western Group on Educational Affairs (WGEA).  His study titled “Prospective randomized crossover evaluation of a flipped classroom model for emergency medicine trainees” will attempt to determine the efficacy of a new educational paradigm in graduate medical education.

The WGEA is one of four regional groups of the AAMC promoting excellence in medical education by fostering the professional development of educators and advancing research in medical education.
