The University of California, San Francisco, Fresno-Central San Joaquin Valley Medical Education Program, a clinical branch of the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, offers medical students core and elective clinical clerkships which are conducted in close association with the house-staff training programs. As many as 20-30 undergraduate medical students can be accommodated at any given time.

The context of the program, in a region that is predominantly rural and agricultural, presents opportunities for clinical experience and investigation of health problems not so readily available in larger, urban medical centers. Taking advantage of this unique situation, many of the patient care, teaching, and research activities of the UCSF Fresno Medical Education Program have orientation toward rural health problems and health service needs.

The dedicated UCSF Fresno faculty teaches hands-on medicine in a spontaneous, frank, and engaging manner. The faculty consists of people who enjoy students, enjoy teaching, and realize the importance of exposing students to the realities and challenges of medicine. The small medical student to faculty/house-staff assures medical students of the close one-to-one relationship of learning that is not so readily available in other medical institutions.

We welcome the interest of medical students in our UCSF Fresno Undergraduate Medical Education Program.

Sincerely,

Adriana Padilla, MD
Director of Undergraduate Medical Education
