I knew pretty early into interviews that I wanted to serve a county population. That narrows the list down awful quick. Interview season is a funny snapshot in time where you get only a day or two to really feel out programs. I honestly didn’t know much about Fresno until interview day, but when I got here I was absolutely blown away.
UCSF Fresno has a diverse patient population that is truly dependent on the care provided at CRMC. Our catchment area is massive and serves a very low socio-economic demographic. It was obvious that CRMC is a beacon in the community, and I wanted to be a part of that.
The central valley has an alarmingly low doctor to patient ratio. Because of that Fresno has a very high-acuity patient demographic. We have the opportunity to see a depth of pathology and perform procedures that are generally simulated elsewhere. I told someone at the interview dinner that I wanted to become confident running codes. They told me that if I came to Fresno I would get confident at running multiple simultaneously. I chuckled. Walking through the department the next day there were two adult codes and a pediatric at the same time.
Beyond the crazy pathology, Fresno is an old, strong and well respected department/program. The Faculty here are amazing and have seen and done it all. The people here are super friendly and excellent! Fresno was really a no-brainer. The Icing on the cake comes as an affordable city with easy access to some of the best backpacking and hiking in the world. I feel so fortunate to be here and am confident that I am receiving some of the best emergency medicine training around.
