SPOTLIGHT
Yona Nicola, MD, Amy-Lee Bredlau, MD and Trisha Beck, MD
Welcome to UCSF Fresno Pediatric Residency Program! Trisha, Amy-Lee and I are the chief residents this academic year and would like to share with you a little bit about ourselves and what we like about this residency program.
I am Yona. I am originally from Europe where I completed my medical education. Eager for new horizons, I moved to Israel shortly after medical school, where for the first time I discovered the amazing world of Pediatrics. It was love at first sight! During my training in Israel, I met my husband and moved to the US. It was not an easy decision! As a young physician at the end of my training, I was eager to start practicing medicine and mature as an attending physician. I never imagined myself as an intern again. With these feelings, I moved to Fresno three years ago. Believe it or not, Fresno was not a place where I strongly considered coming, especially since my US home is in Southern California. Nevertheless, this program was my first choice, a choice I have never regretted. Indeed, since the day of my interview, I have been continually impressed by all the amazing opportunities offered by UCSF Fresno Pediatrics. Personally, coming here with a certain level of experience and being exposed to different training approaches in different countries, I was impressed by the exceptional clinical environment, enormous diversity of clinical cases seen and the outstanding opportunities for hands-on learning, and as much challenge as you can handle on all rotations. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to train here.
My colleague, Amy-Lee, was born and raised in the West, spending most of her life in Idaho and Nevada. She became a wife and mother early on in life, but also attended UNLV for college and thereafter went to the University of Nevada School of Medicine. From there, she sought a residency program that would give her the opportunity to learn pediatrics in a small-town setting, but with all the advantages (cultural, educational, recreational) of a large city, with unique pathology and outstanding supporting faculty. Fresno had this to offer, as well as great access to world renowned National Parks and the Central Coast of California, both of which she’s taken many day trips to visit over the years since relocating to Central California. After finishing this year, Amy-Lee plans to move to Rochester, New York where she’ll be starting her fellowship in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology.
Trisha was born in Washington and since has lived in several areas on both the West and East Coasts. After living in Mexico and the East Coast, she decided to return to California for her residency to be closer to her family. She is a graduate of Ross University School of Medicine and following residency plans on pursuing a fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine. She has a special interest in learning about new cultures as well as traveling abroad, and has found the rich cultural diversity in Fresno a great asset as she plans to expand on these experiences in her future career as an Emergency Medicine physician. Trisha also enjoys Fresno’s close proximity to neighboring cities and often spends time off visiting family in Northern California and Oregon.
It’s hard to believe three years have gone by so quickly; however, it has been an enriching experience for us as new pediatricians. We work in a state of the art children hospital (modern, recently built, and the tenth largest in the nation) with a full complement of sub-specialists who are easily accessible and ready - even eager - to teach, with an extraordinary breadth of pathology. Community Medical Center is the perinatology referral center for the Central Valley; the residents are exposed to numerous high-risk deliveries and become comfortable managing even the most premature deliveries. Our program provides a very strong foundation for a career in Pediatrics, and many of our graduates go on to fellowships at top programs in such areas as Neonatology, Hematology-Oncology, Pediatric Critical Care and Emergency Medicine. Others do general pediatrics in private clinics or rural areas, and report back that they are very well prepared.
Wherever you see yourself in the future, the UCSF Fresno program has the resources and support to help you achieve your goals. So again welcome, and don’t hesitate to contact us so that we may tell you more about the many advantages of our training program and the wonderful community where we live.
