DONATION TO UCSF FRESNO ALZHEIMER’S & MEMORY CENTER BENEFITS VALLEY RESIDENTS

The UCSF Fresno Alzheimer’s & Memory Center has received a $159,000 donation from the estate of Muriel Hagerty, a long-time resident of the San Joaquin Valley. Mrs. Hagerty, who lived in Hanford, became an advocate for people with Alzheimer’s when a close friend was diagnosed with the disease.

“This generous donation will stay in the San Joaquin Valley to benefit area residents,” said Alex Sheriffs, MD, co-director of the UCSF Fresno Alzheimer’s & Memory Center. “The gift will enable us to sustain valuable Alzheimer’s-related research and enhance educational and support services provided by our center.”

The Alzheimer’s & Memory Center employs a multi-disciplinary team of clinicians to conduct clinical research on Alzheimer’s and related dementias, including changes in neural circuitry, neuropsychological changes, caregiver issues, and the impact of dementia on early-stage patients. Specialists at the center currently are engaged in eight research projects in an effort to find a cure and promote healthy lifestyles for prevention of the disease.

The center has been serving the central San Joaquin Valley for more than 16 years by working with patients and their families to diagnose Alzheimer’s and related dementias, providing community education programs and offering support groups for families.

In addition, the center provides a training site for medical residents in geriatrics and physicians conducting specialized health professional education in geriatrics and dementia.

The UCSF Fresno Alzheimer’s & Memory Center serves Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, San Luis Obispo, Stanislaus, Tulare and Tuolumne counties.
