ROTATIONS

Inpatient medical teams include a PGY-2 or 3 level resident working with one or two PGY-1 residents and a dedicated Hospitalist internal medicine faculty member. Medical students doing core internal medicine rotations or UCSF students doing 4th year clerkships are often part of the medical team.

Ambulatory experience includes "block" clinic rotations in all three years of training as well as continuity clinics, which extend throughout the entire residency. Each of the residents has two continuity clinics per week when on an outpatient rotation, and one per week during inpatient rotations. One clinic is at the VA hospital and the second is at UMC or Sierra Clinics.

Subspecialty elective rotations are available and provide greater in-depth knowledge and experience. Resident responsibilities include both inpatient consultations and outpatient clinics. These rotations often include experience at several of the program's affiliated hospitals as well as outside facilities and offices. By the completion of the three-year program, residents will have completed rotations in most of the subspecialty fields: cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, infectious diseases, nephrology, neurology, rheumatology and pulmonary medicine.
Selected residents are also provided the opportunity to do one elective as a PG2 and/or PG3 at UCSF. The program provides housing and parking for the residents while they are in San Francisco.

The following is a typical categorical resident three-year schedule:
