CURRICULUM

The training program is integrated between Community Regional Medical Center (CRMC), the program’s main teaching hospital, and the Fresno Veterans Affairs Central California Health Care System (VACCHCS). The curriculum is competency based with a problem based learning format. This increases the opportunity for the program’s trainees to acquire the life-long learning skills. The curriculum at both facilities features strong hands-on inpatient experience in caring for patients in intensive care units and on the general medicine wards and telemetry.

The basic curriculum provides balance between acute care/critical care medicine and ambulatory medicine in diverse training settings. Residents typically spend half of their time in inpatient settings and half in ambulatory settings. The following is a typical three-year schedule in the residency:

In addition to experiential training, we have an extensive conference-teaching schedule that includes morning report, grand rounds, core curriculum, and board review courses. In addition to a training stipend, we also provide each of our residents with a personal digital assistant and with access to UpToDate.

One unique opportunity for our residents is an international elective.  During the last several years, Dr. Steve Stoltz has participated in an international medical mission.  In the last few years, he has taken one resident with him and designed and delivered a unique international medicine curriculum.  In 2003 the elective was in Guatemala and in 2005 in Bolivia.
