Welcome to the UCSF Fresno Department of Medicine webpage. We hope you find the information here valuable to you. In 2005, we celebrated our 30th anniversary as the only community-based regional UCSF medical training campus with the opening of the UCSF Fresno Center for Medical Education and Research. This campus relationship and new facility allows us to provide a unique training opportunity in internal medicine. In April 2007, we moved the inpatient components of the program from University Medical Center to the new Community Regional Medical Center. This $245 million expansion provides us with a state-of-the-art facility for residents and students to provide patient care and learn their profession. Residents continue to have the opportunity to evaluate and care for community patients in a referral hospital with University faculty. In addition they continue to learn and work in the highly managed VA medical system.
In addition to these changes in the residency location, we have recently received a 5-year accreditation from the ACGME. We also began fellowships in both Cardiology and Pulmonary in July 2007 and a fellowship in Infectious Diseases in 2008. In 2008 we also received approval to initiate a fellowship in gastroenterology beginning in July 2009. Coupled with these fellowship applications we are building our research programs through the UCSF Fresno Center for Clinical Studies. Our faculty members have published over 100 papers over the last three years. We currently have funded research projects in many areas including HIV management, cellular respiration, hepatitis, nutrition, educational informatics, preventive cardiology, asthma epidemiology, clinical cardiology, sepsis, stroke management, and adult respiratory distress syndrome. Residents are encouraged to work with faculty mentors and complete a clinical research project during their residency.
At UCSF Fresno we offer both a preliminary year of training in internal medicine and a complete three-year program in internal medicine leading to board certification. Our mission is to produce well-rounded clinicians prepared for either the practice of general internal medicine or further training in subspecialties. Our program is designed to provide residents with progressive patient responsibility consistent with their level of training. We pride ourselves on our ability to afford residents a great deal of hands-on experience in patient care while at the same time encouraging the use of evidence-based medicine principles and resources. We hope you will consider joining our program.
