EFFECT OF LEAVE ON BOARD ELIGIBILITY

Boards vary in their requirements regarding the effect of effect of leaves of absence, for any reason, taken during residents’ training on their eligibility and the timing for board certification

Residents who do not graduate on or before October 31, 2013, are not eligible to apply for certification in 2013.

Residents who are expected to complete training by June 30 are automatically provided the application link for the April examination. Residents who are expected to complete training between July 1 and October 31 may be declared eligible to apply for the April examination based on a recommendation from their residency program director. Residents who are expected to complete after October 31 and before December 31 will be permitted to apply for the November exam.

To be admitted to the Certification Examination in Internal Medicine, physicians must have satisfactorily completed, by August 31st of the year of examination

8 weeks in any of the first 3 years of GME, or 6 weeks during the fourth year of GME, or a total of 20 weeks over the 4 years

 

Candidates who will complete their residency training after September 30, 2014 will not be allowed to sit for the June, 2014 written examination.

Peds

One month of absence is allowed each year for leave (eg, vacation, sick, parental leave). Absences greater than 3 months during the 3 years of residency should be made up with additional periods of training

 

An applicant must satisfactorily complete the standard length of training before the first day of the month in which the exam is administered. This requirement applies even if all formal training was completed earlier and the applicant is on leave the first day of the month.

Psych

Training programs may schedule individual leave or vacation time for residents in accordance with the overall institutional policy. Leave or vacation time may NOT be used to reduce the total amount of required residency training or to make up deficiencies in training.

Surgery

All applicants must complete 48 weeks of full-time clinical activity in each of the five years of residency, regardless of the amount of operative experience obtained. For documented medical problems or maternity leave, residents may take an additional two weeks off during the first three years of residency, for a total of 142 weeks required in the first three years of training, and an additional two weeks off during the last two years of residency, for a total of 94 weeks required in the last two years of training.

 

All training must be completed by July 1 to be eligible for that year's QE
