Welcome to the UCSF Fresno Global Health Curriculum!

Are you interested in global trends in illness and healthcare? Do you want to learn more about culture-based health care practices in the highly diverse patient population of the central valley? Do you enjoy meeting folks who have done amazing medical projects abroad and see how they encountered both unique obstacles and life-changing opportunities? If you’re saying yes! to any of the above, the UCSF Fresno Global Health Curriculum is designed for you!

Here at UCSF Fresno Medical Center, we are fortunate to have some truly amazing speakers who have done groundbreaking projects all over the world. They bring their life experience and clinical expertise to serve our truly diverse patient population, and the Global Health Curriculum provides a unique, multi-disciplinary forum for these practitioners to teach others about their international health care experiences. Our group meets on a monthly basis, from September to June each academic year. Event announcements are made via email, Facebook, and the campus newsletter (Physicians’ Edition) where we will feature international insights and upcoming events about the UCSF Fresno Global Health speakers series.

The Global Health educational curriculum will incorporate clinical didactics by faculty on a range of topics of importance in global health, and presentations by residents who have done an overseas clinical elective. See the table below for a preview of what’s up ahead.  This unique community was formed in 2008 to serve the international medicine education needs of the Central Valley. Since its formation, the UCSF Fresno Global Health Curriculum has had over 80 participants among faculty, residents and medical staff, all of whom have contributed their valuable stories, insights and time as participants or speakers for our events. The UCSF Fresno Global Health Curriculum represents a group of dedicated providers associated with the UCSF Fresno Medical Education Program. Our events highlight local connections to international medical projects and overseas clinical opportunities. Attendance is open to healthcare staff and clinical providers from all departments and disciplines, including physicians, nurses, therapists, and staff.

Updates—Fall 2014

  1. Our very first event is a film viewing and discussion of the epic documentary film “HALF the SKY: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide” and all are invited!! September 26, at 4 pm in the UCSF Auditorium.
  2. We have arranged almost all our meetings to be on LAST FRIDAY OF EACH MONTH, at 4 to 6 pm, at the UCSF building room 118. Our goal is to involve as many participants as possible, by creating a "Global Health Happy Hour" right on campus, where our community can meet over snacks, learn about international health issues,  and forge collaborative projects with new friends as well as old colleagues.
  3. To help you stay in touch between our monthly gatherings, we have created a Facebook page where you can share your projects, announcements, questions, and advice with the rest of the community! Join us and join the conversation!  https://www.facebook.com/groups/368994383236895/
  4. There are lots of opportunities for collaboration with global health educators, researchers, and thought leaders in the larger UCSF Community. For example, Two of our EM-R4 residents (Dr Tom Kim and Dr Brandon Chalfin) will begin the highly competitive Global Health Scholars Research and Education Program at main campus this fall, and will be presenting their work later on this spring  as featured speakers for our curriculum here in Fresno. http://globalhealthsciences.ucsf.edu/education-training/clinical-scholars

As you can see, we have a stellar lineup of speakers and topics, covering a broad geographic and thematic range.
We are pleased that their uniting quality is that this truly is "news you can use," whether you are planning to go overseas soon, or just want to know how better to serve our diverse patient population here at home in the Central Valley.

We are always looking for volunteers from all disciplines and training levels to continue the wonderful legacy of education and collegiality which is the cornerstone of this initiative. If you would like to be a speaker or instructor at these or other events, please email us and we will definitely try to get you matched up with others who have common interests in your region and topic.  Look for more emails with flyers and details in the weeks and months to come, and please stay in touch with your questions, comments and suggestions.
