Professional Activities Theme at the 26th IEEE-EMBS Annual Conference September 1 – 5, 2004, San Francisco, California

EMBS is a well-established international professional society having about 8000 members worldwide.  The annual conference typically attracts more than 1000 paying attendees.  About 20% of our membership consists of engineers in industry (from over 900 companies).  In the past our conferences have consisted almost entirely of academic presentations, but we are now expanding to include areas of particular interest to practicing engineers.  Over the past couple of conferences we have included one full track devoted to clinical engineering.  This year, we have added a major theme for professional activities. 

The activities of this major theme of the conference are geared towards practicing bioengineers.  The aim of this theme is to bring together working bioengineers to form a new community for the exchange of ideas.
