Paul C. Lauterbur, Ph.D., Nobel Laureate
2003 Nobel Prize in Medicine
Dr. Lauterbur, Distinguished Professor, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is recognized as the father of MRI.  He shares the 2003 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Sir Peter Mansfield of the University of Nottingham in England.  In his keynote speech, Dr. Lauterbur will share with us his experience of inventing the imaging principles for MRI as well as his view on interdisciplinary research.

Dr. Katona will discuss the Whitaker Foundation’s support of Biomedical Engineering and its impact on the development of the field.

The IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society will hold its annual international conference at the historic St. Francis Hotel in Union Square in the center of San Francisco in 2004. The conference will offer an opportunity for professional interaction in all areas relevant to biomedical engineering. In addition to the technical programs, both professional and leisure tours will be available. Professional tours will afford attendees the opportunity to visit local research facilities in both educational and industrial settings. The social program for attendees and accompanying individuals will include tours within San Francisco as well as surrounding areas. Pre and post conference extended tours will also be available.
