RESEARCH

Are your residents and faculty involved in research?

Yes. A major goal of our department is to encourage and facilitate faculty and resident research. At any given time there are approximately 15 active research projects in progress. Our department also participates in national, multi-center trials. Residents may participate in ongoing faculty research or design and complete research ideas of their own.

Do residents have time for research?

Each resident spends one month on a research rotation during the PGY-2 year, during which they learn about reading the medical literature, basic research design, statistics, and writing, and they participate in research and IRB meetings. In addition, one advantage of a four year program is having more elective time to complete projects.

What kind of support do you have?

We have a faculty Research Director, Greg Hendey, MD (ghendey@fresno.ucsf.edu) who is responsible for facilitating research by the residents and other faculty. We also have a full-time Research Coordinator, and a departmental budget for funding projects. Through UCSF Fresno we have local access to a statistician, epidemiologist, and a medical media center for posters and illustrations. We also have plenty of computer hardware and software, along with access to great databases from the hospital, trauma system, and EMS. Our department fully funds trips to present research abstracts at state and national meetings, and our residents and faculty present at state and national meetings such as SAEM, ACEP, Western SAEM, and CAL/ACEP every year.

Our Research Coordinator!!!

Brandy Snowden, MPH is our talented and enthusiastic research coordinator. She helps us keep all of our projects on track and organized, and she has been a tremendous help to our research efforts.
brandy.snowden@fresno.ucsf.edu

Do you have laboratory space available?

Yes. There are basic science laboratory and animal research facilities available through Veteran's Hospital in Fresno. These sites are supported by UCSF. Further the opportunity to perform large animal research is available through the veterinary program at California State University, Fresno.

CITI Human Subjects Protection Training

Everyone involved in a research program needs to complete an educational module on the ethical treatment of human subjects in a research study, and the one recommended by our IRB can be found at the following link:  https://www.citiprogram.org/default.asp

You'll need to register with a user name and password so that it can keep track of your progress through the module.
Scroll down to UCSF in section 1, and choose the "basic human subjects - biomedical" course.  Good luck!

What kind of projects are you doing?

The research interests of the faculty are diverse and include topics within the areas of EMS, toxicology, wilderness medicine, ultrasound, diagnostic testing, and various clinical emergency medicine projects.  Examples of current research projects include:
