National Medical Advisors

Who are Drs. Shalit and Stroh? Well, apart from being two upstanding Emergency Medicine attendings, they serve as the National Medical Advisors to the National Park Service (NPS) for EMS. In 2000, University Medical Center was awarded the contract to provide EMS/medical direction to the National Parks. Drs. Shalit and Stroh accepted the challenge and have never looked back.

Several of the many program accomplishments include:

Drafted standardized protocols for NPS Parkmedic and EMT-basic providers
Created a runsheet (PCR) for documentation
Created an EMS database and provided it to the Park Service. This is being incorporated as the EMS component of a more extensive NPS database that includes Search and Rescue and law enforcement data as well.
Acted as planners, speakers, and moderators at NPS EMS conferences
Created the only training center in the nation offering Parkmedic certification (see January course)

Ongoing projects include:

Acting as liaisons with Washington, D.C. for EMS medical advice
Creating a NPS EMS Medical Advisor manual
Creating standardized first-responder protocols
Mentoring UCSF-Fresno residents on numerous EMS, Wilderness Medicine, and Emergency Medicine research projects

Drs. Shalit and Stroh extend their deepest gratitude to the Emergency Medicine parkmedic residents, the UCSF-Fresno medical education program, the UMC Emergency Department, and the National Park Service EMS Medical Advisors for all the help and support in making the above mentioned items come to fruition. Without all their contributions, much of this work would remain unfinished.
